Can you get rid of the pests?
Yes in most circumstances a good pest program will eliminate the infestation.
- This will require an integrated approach between the home occupier and the pest control technician.
- Firstly the pests need to be identified by the Technician. E.g. what type of cockroach or Ant is it?
- The Technician will then attempt to locate the habitat of the pests.
- The pests can then be eliminated with a combination of products and techniques.
- The technician will suggest ways to stop further infestation. E.g. hygiene, cleaning, storage, blocking entrance points.
However eliminating pests is a team effort between the home owner and the pest experts. If the homeowner doesn’t work with the technician and follow up on suggested methods to stop infestations, then further problems can occur.

Is the treatment safe for my family?
This depends on the products used in the program, and on the level of infestation.
- Simply all spray applications are toxic – it is the degree of toxicity and how the product is applied that makes the treatment safe or not.
- An effective program will use a combination of toxic and non toxic applications
- Internally this can include monitor traps and gel baits for insect control, along with non toxic aerosols.
- Externally a low toxicity product can be applied to entry points, and target areas where the pests are located and away from people contact areas.
- The Technician should be using products registered with ERMA, and follow label directions to reduce any adverse effects. (Approved Handler Certified)
- Most effective products are designed to break down naturally over a short period of time usually about 12 weeks, which generally allows for about 2 life cycles of an insect/pest.

Is Rat bait really toxic?
Yes it is and should be handled by a trained technician so that the target species can be eliminated without any risk to people and animals, in particular dogs.
- The program should have the bait located in lockable tamper proof rodent stations, therefore reducing the risk non target animals (dogs) picking up the bait.
- Rodent baiting is effective, however it requires cooperation from the home occupier in removing rubbish, cleaning out the section and cutting back any foliage to reduce runways for rodents to enter the dwelling.
There is an antidote for Rodenticides - Vitamin K1, which is available from most Vets. If you suspect your dog has consumed rodent baits then it is very important to have the dog checked out by the Vet.

Do pests spread disease?
Yes they do especially cockroaches, flies and rodents, but other pest can also cause secondary health issues.
- Cockroaches are natures scavengers and flies regurgitate there food back onto surfaces.
- Fleas and bed bugs give nasty bites that can welt up and cause secondary health issues.
- Insects create dust that can be breathed into the body.
- Rodents carry a range of disease and if cornered can attack and give a nasty bite causing the transference of disease.
- Mosquitoes are known carriers of diseases, although not so common in New Zealand. However incidence of Dengue Fever and Ross River Virus has been reported in New Zealand

How can I choose the right Technician?
There is an anomaly in New Zealand with Pest Technicians, which the Environmental Risk Management Authority (ERMA) has tried to sort out by making it compulsory for people applying and purchasing Pest products to have an Approved Handler License. To obtain this license you are only required to sit through a half day lecture and answer a no fail test. Yes it goes some way but really not far enough.
You should choose a Pest Technician who is registered with the Pest Management Association of New Zealand (PMANZ). They will have a current photo ID card, and the good news is that these Technicians have undertaken an Open Polytechnic New Zealand (OPNZ) Certificate in Urban Pest Management, which is a 14 paper program and takes about 2 years to complete with on the Job assessment after completing each module. A fully registered Technician will also have an approved handler’s license and a current first aid certificate.
Qualified Pest Technicians are professionals in the Industry and they also attend Industry training and update each year to remain current with best work practices.

I see advertising for cheaper pricing and 12 month guarantees?
Unfortunately, as in a lot of Industries in New Zealand that are not regulated, you will get cowboys that feed off peoples vulnerabilities, and the Pest Industry attracts some of these people. They play on words like “fully trained” or “Government registered” or “Approved Handler”. This simply means they have attended a short course and have an approved handler’s license at best – be careful letting these people into your home spraying toxic chemicals everywhere.
What about the 12 month guarantees?
Simply the product life of the active ingredient in registered products is designed to break down over about 12 weeks. At best you can expect the residual product to last a solid 3 months, as the product will have expired after that time.
Some unregistered pest operators who give 12 month guarantees hope that you won’t call them back during that time saying the treatment doesn’t work. Often if you do try to call them back you may not be able to find them.
Work with reputable operators who tell it the way it is based on fact, not fiction. Remember if the price is too cheap then the job is generally cheap and not very effective.
